Trevor McDonald was born George McDonald on August 16, 1939 in Trinidad, West Indies. He is married to Josephine with whom he raised two children.
He joined the Caribbean regional service of the BBC World Service in Trinidad in 1960 where he began as a print and broadcast journalist and became a producer, before moving to London in 1969 to work for the BBC.
During his time there, McDonald served as news, sports and diplomatic correspondent before moving on to become a diplomatic editor and newscaster.
In 1973 he became the first black reporter to work for ITN and was twice voted Newscaster of the year. McDonald is perceived as the face of ITN after years of fronting its flagship 'News at Ten' bulletin.
He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1992 Queen's Honours List and awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire on November 30, in the 1999 Queen's Honours List for his services to broadcasting.
Sir Trevor is noted for his speaking voice, which he claims he developed from growing up with and listening to the BBC World Service and was once voted tie-man of the year.
An accomplished journalist, he has penned several books including autobiographies on cricketers Sir Clive Lloyd and Sir Vivian Richards. His own biography, 'Fortunate Circumstances', was published in 1993.
He was the anchor for the News at Ten, and hosted ITV’s flagship current affairs program “Tonight with Trevor McDonald”, which was launched in 1999 until 2009.

Sir Trevor McDonald holds honorary degrees from the University of Plymouth and Liverpool John Moores University.
